Joe Portland

Joe Portland, hailing from Reading, Pennsylvania, brings his extensive coaching experience to Synergy Volleyball Club as the Recruiting Director. Alongside his role at Villanova University as an Assistant Coach, Joe has had a dynamic journey across various institutions.

Coaching Journey

Starting at the University of Virginia, Joe served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2019-2020 and early 2020-2021 seasons, focusing on specialized training in serve reception and serving strategies. At Misericordia University, where he was a Graduate Assistant, Joe played a pivotal role in launching the Men’s Program and contributed significantly to the Women’s program’s record-breaking 26-win season.

Prior to his tenure at Misericordia, Joe was an assistant coach at West Chester University, directing offensive strategies and enhancing blocking techniques. Under his guidance, West Chester achieved a commendable 22-11 record and produced four all-conference players.

Joe Portland currently serves as the assistant coach for the Villanova University Women’s Volleyball team. He was promoted to this position during the spring 2022 semester, having previously worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the Wildcats in the previous season.

Joe’s coaching prowess extends beyond collegiate levels; he has coached the KRVA Region High Performance program, leading teams to notable achievements including a 5th place finish in 2018 and a silver medal in the Girls Youth Division in 2017.

Joe’s coaching journey also includes a successful stint as the head boys volleyball coach at Exeter Township Senior High, where he led the team to a division title and a stellar 12-3 record in 2013.

Having played for the West Chester University men’s team himself and earning accolades such as the MACVC all-conference team, Joe brings a player’s insight and leadership experience to his coaching roles. His dedication spans 12 years coaching at the club level across various clubs and 8 years at the collegiate level.

Joe holds a bachelor’s degree in professional studies from West Chester University and furthered his education with a master’s in organizational management from Misericordia.
